I have e-mailed some men (no women in the early days of HAWK) and asked them to contribute something to our site. They have graciously agreed and so here is my promise to them that they will have their own page(s) to say what they want with no editing from me.
It has been brought to my attention that in 1963 Alpha Battery 6/52 won the Lemnitzer Trophy for highest ASP score, Hqs 6/52 was awarded the Norstad Trophy for highest battalion ASP average. And Charlie Battery won in 1964. But we can find no proof of either. If anybody not only remembers but has pictures or anything to prove it (description will follow) please e-mail me any information, if necessary I will send you my mailing address if you want to mail something.
The Award itself was a replica of a HAWK Launcher with three missiles elevated in the firing position. It stood about 24 inches high. It was all chrome - quite striking. The box that it was transported and sometimes stored in was dark brown and in three sections hinged so that when opened the two smaller sections of the box resembled a set of stereo speakers side by side and separated by about 24 inches. There was a carrying handle on top. This is hard to describe but I have a perfect mental image of it as I write. The inside was covered in (artillery) red velvet.
There were actually two awards - One was called the Lemnitzer Trophy and it went to the best battery. The other (identical) was called the Norstad Trophy which went to the best battalion. I could have the names reversed - it has only been 40 years. Naturally John Tichenor won the Battalion Award and Battery A won the Battery award. These were not personal property - they belonged to the unit and but are not mentioned in any lineage or honors that I can find. They should be in somebody's trophy case.
I hope somebody has the information we are looking for.
